How To Decrease Heating Costs

With heating costs going up every year homeowners are looking for ways to cut back on their utility bills.  There are several easy ways to save money and be more efficient.

  • Caulk around windows and doors.  Depending on the type of caulk and how it was applied, their coatings and sealing power do not last forever.  Caulk can crack, peel and shrink, all of which can lead to unwanted air flow around doors, windows and trim.
  • Install new windows.  Old, ineffecient windows can be letting in cool air in the winter and warm air in the summer. Updating your windows can save up to 10% on your utility bill.

  • Inspect weather stripping on windows and doors.  Weather stripping, especially on the bottom of doors, can wear down or fall off after years of use.  This can cause an actual draft of air into your home which can increase heating or cooling expenses.
  • Use your thermostats program feature.  Setting your thermostat to turn the heat down or off during the middle of the night and when you are gone to work during the day can save substantial amounts of money.  If you can stand to keep the temperature down a few degrees in the winter you can save between 1-2% of your heating bill per degree.
